Children’s Daily Meal Pattern Guide

Food Group                            Daily Servings           Portion Size per Meal

 1-2 Years old–  This is the transition from liquid diets to the addition of complementary foods.

 Milk and Dairy (Whole Milk )   5                         ½ cup or 4 ounces

Meat/Beans                                         2                           1-3 Tbsp.

Vegetable                                               3                           2-3 Tbsp.

Fruit                                                         3                          2-4 Tbsp.

Bread/Pasta/Cereal                         4                          ¼ – ½cup, ½ slice

Fats/Oils                                                 3                           1 teaspoon

 

3-4 Years old– This is the transition from complementary foods to the addition of table foods.

 Milk and Dairy (2%-1%)             4                         ½ cup or 4 ounces

Meat                                                       3                           2-4 Tbsp.

Vegetables                                           4                           3-4 Tbsp.

Fruit                                                       4                           3-4 Tbsp.

Bread/Pasta/Cereal                       4                         ½-1 cup or 1 slice

Fats/Oils                                               3                           1 teaspoon

 

5-7 Years old

Milk and Dairy                                 3                          ½-1 cup

Meat                                                       4                          2 ounces

Vegetables                                           4                          ¼ – ½ cup

Fruits                                                     4                          ¼ – ½ cup

Bread/Pasta/Cereal                       5                          ½- 1 cup or 1 slice

Fats/Oils                                               3                           1 teaspoon

 

Helpful Hints:

– Most of the fats and oils needed daily for a healthy lifestyle will come from foods such as: meat, peanut butter, milk, cheese and yogurt. The majority of fats should be monounsaturated or polyunsaturated sources.

– Whole grains should make up at least ½ of total for the day

– Fiber (grams) Needed Daily = the age of your child + 5

– 2 ounces meat or beans is the same as 1/3 cup
