How can I tell when my baby is getting plenty to eat?

Babies grow at different rates, and at times, you may wonder if your baby is getting enough nutrients daily.

Stages of how much your baby should be eating:

  • Newborn- on average consumes about 1.5-3 ounces (45-90ml) every 2-3 hours. This amount increases as your baby grows and is able to take more in at each feeding.
  • 2 months- your baby may be taking in 4-5 ounces (120-150ml) at each feeding and feedings may be every 3-4 hours.
  • 4 months- the baby may be taking in 4-6 ounces (120-140ml), depending on the frequency of feedings. Each feeding should keep the baby satisfied for at least 2-3 hours.
  • 6 months- your baby’s intake can be between 24-32 ounces (720-950ml) every 3-4 hours.

Periods of growth spurts are a time to anticipate your baby wanting to eat more and staying fuller longer:

  • 7-14 days
  • 3-6 weeks old
  • 4 months
  • 6months

Diapers are another good indicator of when your baby is getting plenty to eat. You should be changing at least 6 wet and 4 dirty (soiled or poop) diapers each day. If you are concerned or notice any signs that your baby isn’t getting enough nutrition, call your doctor.

Signs that babies are hungry include:

  • moving their heads from side to side
  • opening their mouths
  • sticking out their tougues
  • placing their hands, fingers, and fists to their mouths
  • puckering their lips as if to suck
  • nuzzling again their mothers breast,Dr. DiSanto,MD and Karin DiSanto, IBCLC
